Cool Clubs

DRI values the power, passion and enthusiasm in young people in making this world a better place. Young people around the world are standing up to politicians and polluters and taking their future into their own hands. In our communities, our schools, our countries and abroad we have the tools to take action and stop the climate crisis and the young people will use them. Through the Cool clubs initiative DRI seeks to harness the energy and innovation of young people and children in school to effectively change perceptions and implement practical solutions to mitigate the impacts of climate change in Zimbabwe. The Cool clubs concept integrates the corporate social responsibility and business model of responding to climate change. It provides young people with exciting opportunities to initiate social enterprises concepts and ideas, take the lead, have fun, and stop the climate crisis.

Geographical presence

The project is already active in a few schools in Harare, Midlands, Mashonaland Central, and Mashonaland West provinces and is currently on an expansion drive that will see it in all 10 provinces of the country by the end of the year. Any registered school or institution with concern for the environment and is willing to take practical action qualifies to become a part of the project. Activities

“Many clouds but little rain, this is how we can describe our current policies and actions on climate change. We have made big promises but small action at the frontline, we need to act and to act is now” - L Makurumure Youth in Climate Change Activist

Very little action has been taken to ensure that citizens enjoy their right to a clean and safe environment. As young people we have a distinctively unique stake in the fight against Climate Change. Our decisions and actions will shape the world we live in for the rest of our lives. Therefore as young people it is essential for us to be innovative, assertive and be on the frontline in the fight to preserve the environment. The theme of all our activities is “The time to act is now.” Some of the activities lined up for this year include sponsored walks, clean up campaigns, sale of energy efficient products, environmental education, quiz competitions, tree planting, international collaborations and exchange programs.

Partnerships

Our biggest partners in this project are the Young people themselves. The success of the project is highly dependent on the support and cooperation of the school administration, pa student body .
